#AOTM137: Sister Nancy – Bam Bam

29th October 2015WORDS: Jago

‘Bam Bam’ was produced by Winston Riley and released in 1982 as part of Sister Nancy’s debut LP on ‘Techniques’. This is the song many know ‘Muma Nancy’ for. The song was created after Sister Nancy followed Yellowman to a studio session at Harry J’s studio, which was ran by ‘Volcano’s’ Harry & Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes. Yellowman was working on a track, in which he sang the lyric ‘Bam Bam’. When Sister Nancy heard this, she must have been hit by a rush of inspiration, as she instantly knew it was what was needed to complete her debut album ‘One Two’. She left that session and contacted ‘Winston Riley’ to collect her, and as they say, the rest is history…

In a recent interview ‘Muma Nancy’ said “There’s no secret, Bam Bam is just Bam Bam.” Recorded on the Stalag Riddim, it is arguably her most notable and indisputably her most successful song to this day. ‘Bam Bam’ is a staple vinyl needed to complete any selectors collection.

In more recent years it has been remixed by various different producers, as well as re-licked for the collaboration with UK artist Stylo G on his 2013 release Badd. It has even been used in the Hollywood film ‘The Interview’, which is great news as the more people hear and know this record, the better.

So what can we expect from ‘Muma Nancy’ in years to come? We know that she is still touring, so given the opportunity I suggest you catch her live show. She will inevitably be back in the studio some time soon, to record some more great music for us all to enjoy!
