#AOTM137: Roots Manuva – Fighting For

30th November 2015WORDS: Ed West

The second track on Roots Manuva‘s latestĀ album ‘Bleeds’. An album directed at a wider audience, with less slang; an album he feels he could play at his son’s school, as mentioned in a recent interview with The Guardian. ‘Fighting for?’ An honest expression of apathy caused through traumatic life events. Pragmatic views of how we expel emotional energy through difficult times. Much can be interpreted from these lyrics, but I feel that Roots is perhaps struggling to come to terms with negative things that have happened to him. Trying not to live in fear whilst constantly fighting for hope. The instrumental arrangement carries a warm comfortable feel that aims to address listeners in a unifying manner. A classic gospel/soul sound, with chords of hope that cumulate the purpose of the piece.
