#AOTM137: Calibre

6th January 2016WORDS: Sam Evans

What better way to roll into 2016 than by having the infamous Calibre at the helm. An artist who epitomises the ethos of true-to-the-craft, he is responsible for some of the most beautiful tracks in Drum & Bass to date. His consistently unique sound and spotless music production has seen his work featured on labels such as; Soul:R, Critical, Exit, V Recordings, Innerground, Deep Medi, CIA, 31 Records, Commercial Suicide and many more.

Calibre aka Dominick Martin has been involved with music from a very young age. Dom began his academic music career playing violin. He then went onto study Fine Art at university before being drawn to producing Drum & Bass in 1995, with his first signed release appearing in 1998 under the now defunct Dublin label, ‘Quadrophonic’.

A few years passed before he exploded into the scene in 2001 with the album ‘Musique Concrete’. Since, he has amassed a soulful catalogue with over sixty singles and ten albums.

Fast forward to September 2015, the release of the ‘Dreamz Dub’ EP, and we see how his style has kept to its roots. Amongst the wholeness of the clean organic sounds, his graceful simplicity leads you through a soulful dream of meditative warmth.

Words almost fail to describe the impact this man has had on the Drum & Bass scene so far. From deliciously smooth rollers to the deep dark introspective wonders, until now, there is not a single track I dislike. I’ll forever hold this name highly in my musical world. To one of my greatest unassuming legends, cheers Calibre!
